Los Angeles Dodgers’ starter Ryu Hyun-jin was moved to the 60-day disabled list (DL) for tendinitis in his left pitching elbow, Monday (local time), from the 15-day DL.

The Dodgers put Ryu back on the 15-day DL on July 20, but the team said the move is retroactive to July 8, a day after he made a start against the San Diego Padres. If he will be activated from the list, the pitcher can return only after Sept. 7.

The Dodgers’ latest move intends to enhance the mounds by acquiring a new pitcher. With Ryu’s absence, the team made a free spot on the 40-man roster, before the non-waiver trade deadline on Monday. The 60-day DL is not included in the 40-man roster, while the 15-day DL is.

Because of Ryu’s move, the Dodgers have acquired right-hander Josh Field from the Houston Astros’ Triple-A team. The Astros got Yordan Alvarez, a Cuban infielder who has played in the minors, from the Dodgers.

Ryu was first transferred to the DL in May 2015, when he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He missed the entire season last year. During his rehab this spring, Ryu had to deal with shoulder and groin issues. He made eight rehab appearances in the minors before returning to the majors.

Ryu returned to the majors on July 7 against the San Diego Padres. He was touched for six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. However, he was moved to the 15-day DL while he was preparing for the second game. The Dodgers did not mention actual date for Ryu’s return at the time.

The 29-year-old player signed a six-year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers before the 2013 season. Ryu is the first player who jumped from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to the majors via posting.
