Acting FIFA Secretary General Markus Kattner has been sacked after paying himself millions of euros in bonuses.
Kattner was appointed to the FIFA role after his predecessor, Jerome Vackle, was sacked over ticket allegations. Kattner had been deputy secretary general since 2007.
It is believed that former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and right-hand man Vackle knew of the bonuses. The amount has not been revealed.
Kattner is the latest high-level FIFA executive sacked after corruption allegations.
FIFA will now likely open a formal ethics investigation against Kattner
“Kattner has been dismissed from his position, effective immediately,” FIFA said on Monday. “FIFA’s internal investigation uncovered breaches of his fiduciary responsibilities in connection with his employment contract.”
No other FIFA directors are known to be involved in the case.
FIFA has appointed United Nations official Fatma Samoura of Senegal as secretary general.
Samoura, 54, is due to start her role next month.
