The season-opening Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was filled with interesting stories other than Kim Hyo-joo’s victory.
In the third round of the tournament in the Bahamas, on Saturday, Jang Ha-na fired an albatross on a par-four hole for the first time in LPGA Tour history. Jang used a 3-wood on the 218-yard 8th hole for a tee shot. The ball dropped about a meter away from the cup and rolled into it.
She told the LPGA that she didn’t see where the ball stopped at first. "Oh my God, it was so unbelievable," she told Golf Channel. "Right now, my heartbeat is a little fast." After she confirmed it, she got down to her knees and bowed to the hole.
Albatross is the term for a three-under par on a single hole. Jang had one albatross while competing on the KLPGA in 2012. Also, she had two career holes-in-one on the KLPGA and had four in practice rounds and pro-ams, according to the LPGA.
On Sunday, Korean-Australian Lee Min-ji helped Kim Hyo-joo at the winner’s interview by interpreting her Korean comments into English. Kim reportedly understands English, but is not fluent in speaking it.
Days earlier, Michelle Wie was stung by a bee Thursday and finished with a three-over par, and world No. 2 Park In-bee withdrew from the tournament because of back pain after finishing her second-worst round of her LPGA Tour career with a seven-over 80.
