SK Wyverns outfielder Jung Eui-yoon, 29, has been named the MVP for September, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said Friday.
Jung earned 16 votes from the 28 KBO press corps members to clinch his first player of the month title. Jung was followed by NC Dinos starting pitcher Jack Stewart and Stewart’s teammate, first baseman Eric Thames, who received five and three votes respectively.
With a batting average of .422, including 9 home runs and 23 RBIs last month, Jung spent his most prolific month helping his team to lead in the race for the fifth and final playoff spot.
Jung made his professional baseball debut in 2005 for the LG Twins. Though he seemed to be a promising slugger, with 76 hits including 8 home runs and 10 doubles in 106 games of his rookie year, he has not lived up to expectations, adding only 23 more home runs until he was traded to the Wyverns on July 24.
On his new team, however, he has recorded a batting average of .346, including 14 home runs and 44 RBIs in 57 games.
Jung will be awarded a cash prize of 2 million won ($1,690) and a 1 million won gift certificate from Tirebank, a local tire retailer and KBO sponsor.
