KJ Choi Invitational delayed to next year

The KJ Choi Foundation, led by Korean PGA golfer Choi Kyung-ju, said Friday that it has postponed its KJ Choi Invitational golf tournament to next year due to the 2015 Presidents Cup scheduled for October in Incheon.

The KJ Choi Invitational was initially scheduled for a week after the Presidents Cup, but the decision was made to postpone it until next year as Choi needs to focus on his role as vice captain of the Presidents Cup’s International Team, the foundation said in a statement. It added that organizers have had trouble attracting sponsors.

“I tried to as much as I can to hold the event for the sake of my fellow Korean golfers, who play the sport in a harsh environment, but conditions were not helpful,” Choi said in the statement. “Instead, I will do my utmost for the success of the Presidents Cup this year, which I believe will help boost the popularity of men’s golf here, and I will host a golf tournament next year.”

The Presidents Cup is one of the biggest events in the golf world in which 12 golfers representing the U.S. play against 12 other non-European golfers representing the International Team. The 2015 event will come to Incheon for the first time in an Asian country from Oct. 6 to 11 at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club.
