Ko Jong-soo Calls It Quits

By Kim Jae-won

Staff Reporter

Former South Korean international Ko Jong-soo announced his retirement Friday.

Ko has appeared in 171 matches and scored 37 goals, with 34 assists since he debuted in the K-league with Suwon BlueWings in 1996.

The 30-year-old footballer transferred to Kyoto Purple Sanga in the Japanese league in 2003, but did not live up to expectations, notching one goal and one assist in 14 games.

He came back to the BlueWings in 2004, but was waived because he missed the team's practice.

Ko, known for his left-footed kick, resurrected his career in 2007, helping Daejeon Citizen reach the playoffs, but his knee injury limited him to 16 games in the 2008 season. Daejeon did not re-sign Ko after his contract expired at the end of last year and no other teams also showed no interest in him.
