Woman Climbs 8,047-Meter Peak
South Korean female alpinist Koh Mi-young, 40, has successfully climbed the 8,047-meter-high peak of the Himalayas, the 12th highest in the world.
Koh reached the Broad Peak in Pakistan about 12 hours of climbing after departing the last camp on the 7,000-meter level with team leader Kim Jae-soo, 47, Thursday afternoon, the alpinist team of Kolon Sports was quoted as saying.
Koh, who left Seoul on June 18 for the expedition, set up the base camp on the 5,000-meter-high slope on July 3 and successfully climbed the peak in her first attempt.
This is the third peak for Koh, who is known to be the best female sports climber in South Korea, to have conquered those of the Himalayas above 8,000 meters.
The South Korean female alpinist successfully climbed the 8,848-meter Everest in May, following the reach to the 8,613-meter Cho Oyu peak in October last year.
Koh, who intends to climb all the 14 peaks of the Himalayas above 8,000 meters, is scheduled to attempt to climb the 8,046-meter Shishapangma peak this fall.
She plans to depart Pakistan for Seoul around July 25.
