Weather agency appoints first female forecast bureau director general
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has appointed In Hee-jin as the head of its Forecast Bureau Department, making her the first woman to hold the position since the KMA's establishment in 1949.

The 53-year-old, a graduate of Seoul National University's Department of Atmospheric Sciences with both master's and doctoral degrees, began her meteorological career in 2006.
Over the years, she has seamlessly navigated through pivotal roles, including overseeing the forecasting office, managing forecasting technology, shaping forecasting policies and leading planning and finance, among others.
The KMA highlighted In’s pivotal role in advancing the organization during her tenure. Notably, her contributions include spearheading a comprehensive plan for a new forecasting system that introduced detailed short-term forecasts on an hourly basis. As the director of planning and finance, she successfully executed critical projects, playing a key role in designing the vision, development goals and strategies of the KMA.
In addition to her academic prowess and professional achievements, In is recognized for her rich practical experience in forecasting, outstanding work execution capabilities and exemplary planning and management skills. Colleagues have praised her commitment to innovation and her ability to drive positive change within the organization.
The announcement signals a significant step forward in gender diversity within the meteorological field, a sector historically dominated by male leadership. In’s appointment is hoped to inspire future generations of women in meteorology and related sciences.
