Seoul City Hall will block any visitors with disposable cups and demand they discard the cups and all food content at the entrance, starting next year.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Wednesday its intensified efforts to reduce the use of disposable cups would take effect on Jan. 1.
City officials and visitors entering the building will have to throw away take-out plastic and paper cups, as well as their contents, at cup collection bins to be set up at the entrances.
Other types of disposable containers, such as plastic lunch boxes and spoons from delivery food, will also be banned.
The city government will run a special campaign until Jan. 11, to encourage workers and visitors to abide by the rule voluntarily.
“The regulation will be applied at the City Hall building and the annex buildings first. After gathering feedback and preparing supplementary measures, we plan to expand the regulation to other city-affiliated organizations' offices and district offices in the first half of next year,” an official of the city government said.
Earlier in September, Seoul City banned the use of disposable cups in meeting rooms, as well as cafes within City Hall.
