The "bad" level of fine dust in the air is expected to continue through the weekend, according to Air Korea, the fine dust-tracking website of the state-run Korea Environment Corporation.
Air quality across most parts of the nation, except Gangwon Province, will record "bad" on Saturday, the tracker showed Friday.
It said the metropolitan area has been under the influence of various factors including particulate matter and smog from China and domestically produced pollution, while other regions have been suffering apparent static air pollution.
According to the tracker, Seoul's fine dust (PM-10) level shot up to 88 micrograms per cubic meter, with ultrafine dust (PM-2.5) at 44 micrograms per cubic meter at 11 a.m. Friday, exceeding the "bad" air quality threshold of 81 and 36 micrograms, respectively.
It has since fallen, with the fine dust level at 32 micrograms per cubic meter and ultrafine dust at 13 micrograms per cubic meter at 4 p.m. Friday.
