The photo, taken on Oct. 18 on Gyodong Island, just a few kilometers from North Korea, and released on Oct. 25, shows farmer Hwang Rae-ha, 76, gazing emotionally toward the North.

Hwang fled his hometown in Haeseong, Yeonbaek County (now Yonan County), in 1950 aged eight, in a wooden boat to escape North Korean soldiers during the Korean War. He said his only wish is to meet his mother again, even if that is in his sleep.

Choi joined The Korea Times in 2014 after working at AFP, Getty Images and Arirang TV.

He was among 11 awardees in the 190th KPPA “Photo of the Month” awards.
