Two delinquent universities face closure

By Ko Dong-hwan

Daegu University of Foreign Studies (DUFS) and Hanzhong University will be closed permanently for failing to comply with correctional mandates, the Education Ministry says.

An audit earlier this year found that DUFS had falsified its revenue situation. More students had also been dropping out while the number of new students had been falling.

Hanzhong was found to owe staff more than 33.3 billion won ($29.6 million) in unpaid wages.

The ministry ordered the universities to come up with solutions between Apr. 27 and May 27, but they failed to do so.

The ministry official said the latest measures were inevitable to prevent the situation from continuing.

“We will come up with ways for the students and those planning to enroll to transfer to other schools to protect their rights of academic achievement and minimize damage,” the official added.
