A graduate student at Sangmyung University was the lead author of a paper on environment-friendly technology published in the February edition of “Scientific Report,” an internationally renowned science journal.

Lee Woong-gi, 27, a chemistry major, has succeeded in developing a new technology to separate sulfur hexafluoride, a major contributor to global warming which is generated in semiconductor production.

“I hope this technology will help cut greenhouse gas emissions to protect our environment,” Lee told The Korea Times.

It is rare for a master’s degree student to publish his or her own paper as the lead author in “Scientific Report,” which is a sister journal of “Nature,” the world’s most-cited scientific journal.

“I want to thank my academic advisor, Prof. Kang Sang-wook, who encouraged me to devote myself to this field,” Lee said. “Thanks to his effort to provide his students with ample opportunities, we all can achieve good results.”

Prof. Kang also lauded Lee, saying, “He has persevered in his efforts, which I think have produced his success.”
