Dongguk, SK team up for startups

By Chung Hyun-chae

Dongguk University will step up its efforts to encourage students to start their own businesses, through financial help from SK Group, Korea’s third-largest conglomerate.

The university’s Youth Entrepreneurship Center has been selected as a participant of SK’s new project to encourage and support university students to start their own businesses, a school spokesman said Wednesday.

With this project, Dongguk will receive up to 600 million won in support from SK until 2018.

“We plan to develop five more lectures on business startups, vitalize student club activities and organize camps to give students fresh ideas,” said Jeon Byung-hoon, chief of the center. “We will also spread startup culture to regional communities beyond the university.”

Besides financial support, SK Group will help students develop ideas and help them travel overseas to take the lead in various industries by acting as an angel investor.

Dongguk is considered one of the leading universities that nurture startups through a variety of programs for students.
