Acting President Han Duck-soo said Thursday the government will support the growth of the local animation industry by creating a specialized fund and helping attract investment.

Han made the remark during a ministerial meeting, saying the government has drawn up a basic plan to promote the animation industry in order to cultivate it into a new growth engine for "K-contents," or Korean pop culture content.

"We will create an animation-specialized fund to invest heavily in related small and medium-sized firms and venture firms, while actively supporting the attraction of investment to OTT services, broadcasting companies and venture capital," he said.

Moreover, the government will support the development of technology to facilitate the application of artificial intelligence and other technologies to the production of animation while fostering professionals in the field, he added.

Also discussed during the meeting was a plan to improve standards for the production, distribution and storage of drinking water, and a plan to upgrade digital maritime navigation systems.
