Kim Hyung-du, the longest-serving of the current justices of the Constitutional Court, was chosen Monday as its interim leader.

Kim was elected acting president during a meeting of the court's justices following the retirements of then acting President Moon Hyung-bae and Justice Lee Mi-son last week.

A graduate of Seoul National University School of Law, Kim served as a presiding judge of the Seoul High Court, chief researcher of the Judicial Policy Research Institute and vice minister of the National Court Administration, among other roles.

He was appointed a justice of the Constitutional Court in March 2023.

Kim has been described as being ideologically moderate with a keen sense of legal principles and a flexible way of thinking.

With two vacancies on the nine-member bench, Kim will lead a seven-member bench for now.
