Uijeongbu pushes for building of apartment complexes on sites of former U.S. bases

By Park Ji-won

The city government of Uijeongbu, north of Seoul, is pushing for building of apartment complexes on the former sites of U.S. military bases.

The local government has submitted a comprehensive development plan to the Gyeonggi provincial government on utilizing the sites of U.S. army bases, some of which will later be moving to Pyeongtaek.

Under the plan, more than half the site of Camp Kyle, about 132,000 square meters, will be developed into a residential area as well as 36,000 square meters of the 136,000-square-meter Camp LaGuardia.

The city government has been pushing for the building of various facilities there, but failed to pass proposals so far due to opposition from the provincial government.

The Gyeonggi provincial government will hold a public hearing on June 5 on whether to approve the plan. If approved, it will seek approval from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
