President Moon Jae-in said Monday he expects to see “big progress” at the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to be held later this month in Hanoi, Vietnam.

“Thanks to your sincere concern and support, we've made big process for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. I expect big process will be made in terms of advancing denuclearization in North Korea and normalizing relations between North Korea and the United States at next week's U.S.-North Korea summit,” Moon said at the start of his meeting with the leaders of seven religions at Cheong Wa Dae, according to press pool reports.

“I also expect Washington and Pyongyang to accelerate efforts to actually implement detailed action plans for agreements that they agreed on in last year's Singapore summit,” the President said.

The meeting with the country's top religious leaders marked the second of its kind since the President took power in May 2017. Moon hosted them in a meeting in December 2018.

The pool reports said the President also asked the leaders to stand strong for South Korea. The request comes after the country is being divided between conservatives and liberals, as well as the rich and poor, over the success of the second Trump-Kim meeting.
