The sister-in-law of football player Hwang Ui-jo was given a three-year prison term Thursday on charges of exposing the footballer's private life and blackmail.

The woman was indicted for uploading explicit pictures and videos showing Hwang with women on Instagram while presenting herself as a former lover of Hwang.

She claimed the football player had slept with several women, including celebrities, and led them to believe he was dating them, only to dump them later.

The woman is also accused of blackmailing Hwang by sending messages saying "it will be fun" if the videos are leaked.

The defendant had squarely denied the charges against her right up to the trial, citing the possibility of her phone having been hacked, before submitting a hand-written apology to the judges last month conceding to the crime.

Hwang himself is under police investigation over allegations that he filmed a sexual encounter with a woman without consent. Police referred the case to prosecutors last month. (Yonhap)
