A man was sentenced Wednesday to a year behind bars for repeatedly attacking a woman with sulfuric acid in Jeungpyeong, North Chungcheong Province.

The man, 26, threw acid on the woman, 50, a cafe owner, three times ― last July, August and December. The attacks happened in the cafe. She suffered burns on her back and buttocks.

The court heard the man stole the acid from the lab at the company where he worked.

Police said he did not have any apparent ax to grind with the victim.

The defendant pleaded not guilty and has filed an appeal.
