An illegal Chinese alien is being investigated for alleged employment and visa fraud against fellow Chinese on Jeju Island, according to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, Monday.
Police said they have arrested the suspect, surnamed Zhou, 20. They allege he took commissions from 17 people ― from May 2018 until April this year ― after falsely promising employment and visas to guarantee their legal status in Korea. Police say he made more than 10 million won over the year.
The suspect lured the victims through advertisements on social media that said he was a broker for Korean driver's licenses, five-year visas and jobs, police said. Most victims were undocumented immigrants or on student visas.
Zhou entered Korea in 2017 on a student visa but overstayed.
Police are still looking into possible accomplices and whether there are more victims.
