On the busy main street of Songtan’s Shopping-ro, a short jaunt from the main gate of Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, you’ll find a number of really great restaurants, including Sand Fox Gourmet Sandwiches, the area’s most popular sandwich shop.
For those in search of the perfect sandwich bread, look no further. Founder and avid baker Dongoh Lee bakes his bread from scratch daily. While earning his culinary degree, Lee cultivated an interest in baking, and following his graduation in 2016, he opened a gourmet sandwich shop. Today, he produces a stellar lineup of internationally inspired sandwiches with tastes and flavors from around the world.
The most popular item on the menu is the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. It consists of thinly sliced layers of juicy beefsteak and melted American cheese on a delicately crusted hoagie roll. The beef is served with sautéed onions and green peppers, which add a range of savory and sweet flavors into the mix. The Sand Fox version is famously greasy and hearty, making it an instant crowd-pleaser which panders to those in search of Philadelphia’s most beloved comfort food.
Another local favorite is the Korean Steak sandwich, an innovative fusion of traditional Korean flavors on a homemade hoagie roll. It features layers of bulgogi, tender beef marinated with soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic and pepper, grilled with sweet caramelized onions and then toped with crisp romain lettuce, house mayo and sesame seeds. The sandwich merges the rich, umami-packed taste of Korean barbecue with the convenience and familiarity of a handheld sandwich. Voilà, just the sandwich you were looking for in Korea! Pro tip: add a little Korean gojuchang (red chili paste) to spice things up.
If hoagies aren’t your thing, the toasted Cuban Sandwich is another wildly popular item on the menu, It's made with juicy ham, dill pickles, mustard and zesty cheese all layered between two slices of slightly sweet Cuban bread. The sandwich is served pressed and toasted to perfection, which melds all the flavors together and gives the bread a delightful, crispy texture. The blend of savory meats, tangy pickles and melted cheese is perfectly complemented by the sharp mustard. It’s a local favorite and a must-try for sandwich lovers.
The magic of Sand Fox Gourmet Sandwiches is always served between two slices of homemade bread. They open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., daily. You can skip the queue, pay online, and place pickup or delivery orders using the Shuttle app or shuttledelivery.co.kr.
