Art, culture of King Sejong's reign

King Sejong's 1418-1450 reign is remembered today for many advances, both linguistic and scientific. But under his watch culture and art saw many developments too. He oversaw the creation of several forms of ceremonial court music, a calendar system and helped with the development of the movable metal type called eulhae-ja.

Yi Song-mi, emerita of art history at the Academy of Korean Studies, will give a lecture next Tuesday for the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch (RASKB) on these inventions of Sejong's time, as well as sharing samples of artwork including paintings, calligraphy and ceramic arts of the early 15th century.

The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 21 on the second-floor lounge of Somerset Palace in downtown Seoul. All are welcome. Non-members pay 10,000 won and students pay 5,000 won. Visit raskb.com for more information.
