Hikers to visit Namhansanseong

By John Redmond

The Seoul International Hikers Club (SIHC) will take a walk along Namhansanseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Saturday.

The fortress is known for its historical and cultural value and its beautiful natural environment.

The group will hike along Mt. Namhan and walk around the old fortress wall to get great views at the South Gate, West Command Post, West Gate and North Gate.

Hikers can select two of the three options and then the whole group will meet up for a meal in the area.

The SIHC, established in early June 2005 by several Korean and foreign hikers visiting Korean mountains, aims to maintain a balanced approach to hiking in Korea for locals and expats.

“We are known for hiking relatively slowly, enjoying nature and learning about many countries’ different cultures, and we aim to conduct activities safely and all together so that no one feels left behind,” a club spokesman said. “We believe that our group hikes at a speed that is suitable even for beginners.”

First-timers must submit their full names and contact details, including cell phone number.

SIHC strongly recommends that participants wear good hiking shoes and be prepared for a range of possible weather conditions.

“For instance, you may want to pack a raincoat, a waterproof hiking jacket and an extra pair of socks and T-shirt in a plastic Ziploc bag, as well as a light snack (sandwiches and fruits) for your lunch and a bottle of mineral water for you to drink during your hike,” the group said. “Hat, scarf, gloves, warm jacket and trousers are essential.”

The group will meet inside exit 2 of Sanseong Station on Line 8 at 10 a.m. The participation fee is 3,500 won.

To join this hike, please reserve your place via email at sihclub@gmail.com before 5 p.m. Friday.
