Angel House volunteers will meet in Goyang Saturday
By John Redmond
The Angel House volunteers, who get together on the first and third Saturday of every month in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province to help out at an orphanage for people with mental disabilities, will meet up Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Volunteers are committed to cleaning, doing laundry, cooking and assisting with basic personal hygiene, as well as having fun with the residents of Angel House where about 50 disabled residents live.
Abandoned by her own parents because of her disability, Jang Soon-ok founded Angel House in October 1993. Jang grew up as a virtual orphan herself and started the home as a sanctuary for her son and daughter as well as other disabled people in need of a place to stay.
The group will meet inside Yeonsinnae Station on lines 3 and 6 by the benches near exit 3.
To get there, once all the volunteers have arrived, the group will leave exit 3 of Yeonsinnae Station and take bus 703 or 330 toward Goyang Market. It will take about 20 minutes. The group will then transfer to village bus 54. Angel House is the last stop.
Volunteer services will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Participants must pay a fee of 10,000 won for food. The 10,000 won donation can be given to the Korean volunteer leaders, or Jang Jung-won, so they can go to the market to buy food.
Some of the volunteers will cook at Angel House or order food and have dinner with the residents. The remainder of the money will be donated to the residents of Angel House.
Contact angelhouse2013@hotmail.com to join or get more information. Participants must RSVP to Angel House and provide a phone number for the residents’ safety and security.
