Daegu troupe to bring ’Streetcar’ to Seoul

This winter, the Daegu Theatre Troupe is bringing the passion of Tennessee William’s classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” to Seoul, for a special one-night only performance on Dec. 3 at the White Box Theatre in Yongsan, Seoul.

Starting at 8 p.m., the play, which has already had a successful sell-out run to great reviews in Daegu, will hit the road (or rather, the KTX) and set up for a one-off show.

White Box Theatre’s creative director, Desiree Munro is excited to host this special event. “I have been a fan of Tennessee Williams’ works ever since reading them. There is a reason “Streetcar” is his most beloved play. I just can’t wait to see all the hard work the Daegu group has put into this show,” she said in a press release.

“A Streetcar Named Desire” is a 1947 play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams for which he received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948.

Widely considered a landmark play, “Streetcar” deals with a culture clash between Blanche DuBois, a fading relic of the Old South, and Stanley Kowalski, a rising member of the industrial urban working class.

A 1951 American film adaptation of the play was directed by Elia Kazan, who directed the original stage production, starring Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden; all but Leigh were chosen from the Broadway cast, while Leigh had starred in the London West End production.

The local version directed by veteran performer, director and founder of the Daegu theatre troupe, Stevie Baker, promises to be a strong evening of classical American theater. It has been performed in Seoul many times in Korean, but this will be the first English performance of this classic and brutal, yet at times, romantic play.

All tickets cost 20,000 won and can be purchased at the door from 7:30 p.m. on the night.

White Box Theatre is a three minute walk from exit 2 of Hyochang Park Station.
