Halloween-themed fundraiser in Seoul
By John Redmond
Two Halloween themed events will be staged at the Whitebox Theatre in Hyochang Park on Oct. 22 beginning at 1 p.m.
The first, “Cancer Sucks,” is a costume fundraiser to raise money for the Korean Cancer Society (KCS) organized by Probationary Theatre Company. The second is a performance entitled “Gore and Madness,” by the Seoul Shakespeare Company, featuring excerpts from works by William Shakespeare.
From 1 p.m. to4 p.m., patrons will be asked to make a minimum donation of 10,000 won. The first 15 people to arrive will get a prize.
Aside from a silent auction comprising of gift cards to local popular restaurants, free workout sessions and imported wines, there will also be a dance event where participants will be given a set of vampire teeth and the opportunity to dance in a video.
The auction (already boasting over 1 million won in donated gift certificates and vouchers) will be closed and the gift cards and other auctioned items will be given out to the highest bidders. Prizes will also be awarded for the best/most creative costumes.
“You can also choreograph yourself and/or your friends ― or join up with strangers and work together to create some sort of dance that shows your zest for life and/or makes sense for your costume. Don’t worry if you ‘can’t dance’…this isn’t a dance contest ― it is a celebration of life!
“Once all the small groups and individuals have finished prepping their routines and have gotten filmed, participants will be given a set of glow-in-the-dark teeth. We will get together for a large group shot both in the light and in the dark while we are wearing our teeth to show that cancer sucks,” states a press release.
All of the proceeds of the event will go to the KCS.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, cancer has been the number one cause of death in Korea since 1983. Thus, participants are encouraged to donate generously. All donations are welcome in either won or American dollars.
Costumes are strongly encouraged ― anything from animals to zombies are welcome; the only request is that costumes be appropriate for an audience of any age.
Several representatives from the KCS will be on hand at the event to give out information about cancer prevention, treatment, and research. These representatives will also be in charge of collecting the donations. Participants can feel confident that their donations are going directly to the KCS. Those who cannot attend the event in person, but who still wish to donate, are encouraged to give directly to the KCS. Their website is www.kcscancer.org.
“Participants of all ages are encouraged to attend. Information will be available in both English and Korean. Individuals as well as groups are welcome.”

Gore And Madness by the Seoul Shakespeare Company will take place on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
Just in time for All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween), Seoul Shakespeare Company dives into four of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies: “Titus Andronicus,” “Julius Caesar,” “Hamlet,” and “Richard III.” Titus Andronicus serves as the brutal frame work for the production.
