Seoul Survivors shave moustaches for orphanage
By John Redmond
Seoul Survivors, a rugby football club comprising of Korean expats, grew moustaches for charity for the month of November.
Now they will be shaving them off at a special event at Scrooge Pub in Itaewon on Nov. 28 starting at 3 p.m.
More commonly known as Movemeber, the charity drive was originally conceived in Australia and New Zealand as a means to raise awareness of men’s health issues.
Seoul Survivors has taken this concept and decided to raise much needed funds for the Seondeokwon Girls Orphanage and to assist the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in its delivery of school materials to an elementary school in Rason, North Korea, early next year.
The orphanage, founded in 1965, is the Seoul Survivors’chosen community project as it provides a refuge for some of Korea’s most vulnerable citizens.
The HSF is a German think tank with an office here in Seoul. The motto, “In the service of Democracy, Peace and Development,”describes the work of the organization. With numerous development projects and fosterage of international exchange of opinion, the foundation supports international understanding.
Members of the rugby club aim to deliver the school materials to the northern port city in person, however, in the likely event of being denied access to the city, half of the money will be reinvested in the primary community project Seondeokwon Girls Orphanage.
Last year the club raised 4 million won for the orphanage that was used to fund outings, sports days, movie screenings and a Christmas extravaganza.
To get to Scrooge pub, leave Itaewon station (line 6) via exit 1.
