An association of U.S. veterans who served in Korea as members of the United States Forces Korea (USFK) is planning to hold a conference to help junior USFK service members better understand the importance of the alliance between the countries.
The conference, hosted by the Korea Defense Veterans Association's (KDVA) Korea Chapter, led by retired Maj. Gen. Lee Seo-young who served as defense attache to the U.S. from 2011 to 2013, will take place at Osan Air Base, Gyeonggi Province, Thursday, and dozens of USFK personnel including USFK Deputy Commander, Lieutenant Gen. Scott L. Pleus have been invited.
The KDVA Korea Chapter earlier held its first alliance conference for junior USFK service members at U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, also Gyeonggi Province, Nov. 6.
About 80 people participated in the conference, including retired Gen. Choi Byung-hyuk, a former deputy commander of the U.S-Korea Combined Forces Command; Brigadier Gen. Trevor Bredenkamp, deputy commanding general (operations) at the Eighth United States Army; and other high-ranking officers as well as junior service members with the USFK.
Lee emphasized the historic meaning of the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance, saying it is the basis of the defense of Korea under which the country has suppressed war and maintained peace while achieving national prosperity for the past 70 years.
