Military officers probed over alleged rape

By Hong Dam-young

Two Korean military officers are being investigated for allegedly raping a female college student last year before they were commissioned.

The suspects, both second lieutenants, were students at the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in Gwangju when they allegedly raped the drunken student at a motel in the city, according to the Korean military on Tuesday.

The three were drinking near the college at the time. When the victim got drunk, the suspects took her to the motel, where three other men allegedly joined the officers in the assault, the military said.

The alleged crime was revealed by accident when one of the suspects was accused last July of assaulting a woman while on leave.

During the investigation, military police found a video of the previous year’s alleged rape on the suspect’s laptop.

Police said they will investigate the other officer over allegedly plotting the rape.

Three other men who were allegedly involved have been taken to a local police station.
