Multicultural children get Korean lessons

By Kim Da-hee

Some 120 multicultural children in Ulsan Metropolitan City, South Gyeongsang Province, will receive inexpensive Korean language tutoring, the city has announced.

The city has been offering the tutoring program with Daegyo, an educational and cultural service enterprise, since 2013 to help multicultural children learn Korean language. Until last year, the number of beneficiaries had been a total of 315.

The program targets multicultural children aged between five and 12.

A Korean tutor visits each family once a week, offering classes based on the student’s level.

The monthly tuition fee is 3,000 won ($2.62).

An official at the Welfare & Women’s Affairs Bureau said: “The program asks the beneficiary to pay a small amount of money to prevent the person from giving up study and to increase the person’s will to study.”
