Kim Hak-soo, a mass communication professor at Sogang University, has become the first Korean fellow member of the International Communication Association (ICA), the school said Monday.

The ICA is the world’s most prestigious academic association for scholars studying communication.

Majoring in Communication Theory at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Kim is the first Korean scholar to become an ICA fellow member ― and the third Asian after Japanese and Hong Kong scholars.

Kim’s nomination was also the first in the 56-year history of the Korean Communication Association (KCA).

A ceremony for Kim took place during the 65th ICA conference at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to the school, Kim has been selected to the post for his interdisciplinary approach on social science through media communication.

Kim was selected as a fellow academic member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in 2007.
