The number of foreign residents in Jeju, the nation’s southernmost resort island, has increased for six years in a row, data shows.

There were 8,324 males and 7,244 females. A total of 1,033 had obtained Korean citizenship.

Of those without Korean citizenship, 5,214 were immigrant workers, 1,945 had married Koreans, and 418 were students.

In 2009, 6,944 foreigners were living on the island, and this has continued to increase every year but the number has continued increasing every year.

To help foreign resident’s, the island’s provincial administration set up an advisory committee comprised of foreigners in March 2012.

A second committee was established on Sunday with 25 members from seven countries, including the U.S., Japan, China and Russia.

Through March 2017, the members will participate in various foreigners-related social activities including policy seminars, conferences with international students and the publication of guidebooks translated into various languages.
