Live worms have been found inside a batch of chocolate products, raising concerns about mass produced food items, according to a report by a local news agency.
YTN quoted an unidentified man, Monday, who said that his son had found a “strange powder” inside a chocolate Minishell, which is produced by Crown Confectionery. The man was shocked when he opened another chocolate and found a worm in it.
The man bought more of the same product and found more worms inside.
Reporters from YTN purchased the product from the same supermarket and the result was the same.
“With the foil wrapping and plastic packaging over (the candies), it is impossible that the worms could have gotten into the product during the distribution process. It must have been during the manufacturing process,” said the man.
The report raised the question about who is to blame, as both the manufacturer and the distributor are denying responsibility.
The supermarket argued that the product had not exceeded its sell-by date, blaming Crown for the incident.
According to the report, the company refuted the possibility that the worms might have entered the chocolates during the manufacturing process, saying the heat involved would kill them. A spokesman said that insects could have laid eggs during distribution.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said it was conducting an investigation to determine who was to blame.
