Park to serve as Presidents Cup honorary chair
By Yi Whan-woo
President Park Geun-hye will serve as the honorary chairwoman of the Presidents Cup next year, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
It said Park accepted the invitation offered by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem during their meeting at the presidential office, Tuesday.
Park will be the second woman to serve as honorary chairwoman for the Presidents Cup organized by the PGA. The competition is a biennial men’s golf match between the United States and the rest of the world outside of Europe.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard became the first woman to serve in the role in 2011. Korea will host the next competition from Oct. 6 to 11, 2015 in Songdo, Incheon.
This will be the first time that the event will take place in Asia.
The Presidents Cup pits a team of 12 Americans against a squad of the same number of international players representing non-European nations in matches played over four days.
The U.S. has dominated the international team, with eight wins, one loss and one tie, since the event’s inauguration in 1994.
In June, Choi Kyoung-ju, an eight-time PGA Tour winner, was named as vice captain for a team of non-European international stars at next year’s Cup.
Europe exclusively competes against the U.S. in a similar event, the Ryder Cup.
