Suwon Univ. students to sue school over tuition reserves

Eighty eight students attending the University of Suwon said Monday that they will file a suit against their school, urging the university authorities to return part of their tuition fees.
During a news conference held at the building of Lawyers for a Democratic Society or Minbyun in Seocho-dong, Seoul, the students claimed that the university failed to use the tuition fees to improve the quality of education for students.
They said that they will file the suit with the Seoul Central District Court soon.
The school has 430 billion in tuition reserves which the students said was supposed to have been spent on improving school facilities and training students.
They are demanding that the school return from 1 to 2 million won to each student, depending on the years they attended the university. Plus, they said, tuition will be cut should they win the suit.
Earlier, those students urged the university authorities to disclose details of finances. The university has not responded to their calls.
The school said that it has tried to construct new buildings and renovate old buildings and is waiting for permits from the government. The university also claimed that it funded academic training for students or used part of their tuition to purchase material students used in class.
