Arrest warrant sought for bus depot arson suspect

By Kim Bo-eun

Police requested an arrest warrant Sunday for the suspect of an arson attack at a bus depot in western Seoul, which destroyed 38 buses on Jan. 15.

A 46-year-old man surnamed Hwang was apprehended Saturday by Police. He has denied the charges brought against him.

Police apprehended Hwang based on testimonies of employees of the bus company as well as footage from surveillance cameras.

Hwang was fired last year after the bus he was driving ran over and killed a pedestrian. He sued the company, and constantly demanded reinstatement. Hwang also visited the premises of the bus company two days before the arson attack, according to investigators.

Based on analysis of camera footage, testimonies of company workers and records of his phone conversations, police found clues which suggested Hwang might have committed the crime, and searched his home and car.

Police collected evidence from examinations of the confiscated items and apprehended Hwang.

The fire which started at around 3 a.m. on Jan 15 destroyed 30 buses and damaged eight others, causing 1.5 billion won ($1.4 million) in financial damage.

Although it was put out in three hours, the blaze led to delays of services for commuters later that morning.
