'Be rude to your wife if you want to get a divorce'

“Sit properly! Where do you think you are that you are twisting your body around?”

This is one of the comments made by a judge during a hearing, addressing a person who was facing a certain charge in court.

In fact, the Seoul Bar Association said judges make it a habit of making rude comments even to lawyers.

“Do you want to know how to get a divorce? You can get this done by taking a woman you are having an affair with to your house and showing the worst kind of things to your wife,” one judge was quoted as telling a man who was seeking a divorce.

This was part of a report presented by the association concerning the 2,738 judges currently active in the country on their fairness, quality of verdicts and the manner in which they handle their cases.

The compilation was made by 460 (among 9,128 lawyers in Seoul) and was a follow up to reports that have been filed annually since 2008.

The main problem that the lawyers pointed out was righteousness with which judges often approach cases.

In a case cited in the presentation, a judge was actually quoted as saying that he was throwing the case out because it is too difficult to rite up the ruling.
