Sungkyunkwan Univ. expels student with record of rape

By Kim Bo-eun

Sungkyunkwan University has decided to kick out a student, who entered the school through the admissions officer system, for hiding the fact that he had taken part in a gang rape.

The university said Tuesday that it will expel the 19-year-old freshman who had confessed that he had sexually assaulted a mentally-challenged girl together with his friends, while attending high school in Daejeon.

“We have taken the case seriously as the student hid the fact about his involvement in the gang rape when applying for the university through the admissions officer system, which focuses on students’ talents and personality rather than test scores,” a school official said.

The student had been on trial without physical detention for the crime committed in Daejeon in May 2010. But he hid the fact about his criminal act when he applied for the school in August last year.

The court placed him on probation last year considering his age, petitions from parents and teachers for leniency, and a settlement with the victim’s family.

He had been admitted to the university early this year, after being acknowledged for his leadership skills and volunteer work.

His high school teacher, who had been aware of the crime, had written him a recommendation letter which stated that he had been devoted to volunteer work for the community.
