Man draws 15-year prison term for raping daughter

A 45-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for raping his own teenage daughter over several years, a Seoul court said Wednesday, amid growing calls in Korean society for tougher punishment for those who commit brutal sex crimes against youths.

The Seoul North District Court handed down the hefty prison term and 200 hours in a rehabilitation program to the father, whose identity was withheld, convicted on charges of raping his underage daughter on multiple occasions between 2007 and late 2011 in his house in northern Seoul.

The court also ordered that he wear an electronic monitoring anklet for 10 years after serving the jail term and that his personal information be made available to the public.

"The defendant committed a heinous crime against humanity, inflicting unbearable suffering on his daughter," the court said in a ruling.

Currently, the government is looking to revise the law to increase the penalty for sex offenses against minors and punish sex offenders without a complaint from their victims. (Yonhap)
