Former footballer gets prison term for game fixing

The Supreme Court said Friday it has confirmed a 10-months prison sentence for a former professional football player convicted of fixing a game in return for money.

Judge Kim Yong-deok also upheld a lower court's order that the 36-year-old former footballer surnamed Song forfeit 20 million won ($17,286) he received for the rigging.

Song was indicted on charges of playing a role in fixing a professional football league game in 2010 and took money from a gambling broker.

"Song, as the oldest player on his team, helped fix the game and took quite a large amount of money in return, and the responsibility for the crime should not be light," a district and an appellate court have said previously. (Yonhap)
