Japanese traveler allegedly raped

By Kim Rahn

A Japanese tourist was allegedly raped by a Korean at a guesthouse during her trip here, police said Sunday.

The Japanese Embassy filed a complaint on behalf of her to call for an investigation.

The 45-year-old traveler, whose name was not disclosed, said she was sexually assaulted by a friend of the guesthouse’s owner, according to police.

After arriving in Seoul on May 6, she drank with other guests and the offender that night. She claimed she was sleeping in her room afterwards when the owner’s friend entered the room and raped her.

She returned to Japan and faxed the complaint to the Japanese embassy in Seoul, which then filed it with the Mapo Police Station on Wednesday.

Police called in the alleged offender on Saturday for questioning.

“We are looking for clues that back her claim. It may take some time to determine what really happened that night,” a policeman said.

They are questioning the victim as well through emails and phone calls. They also demanded the embassy submit any medical examination record.

“It is unusual that the embassy filed such complaint on behalf of the victim,” the officer said.
