President Lee Myung-bak has named the head of the state-run trade promotion agency as his new minister handling knowledge, industry and energy affairs, and a former police chief as head of the presidential security service, a spokesman said Thursday.
Hong Suk-woo, 58, head of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), was tapped to lead the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, said presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha. Hong will succeed Choi Joong-kyung who offered to step down to take responsibility for last month’s extensive power outages.
“Hong has proven capability in dealing with affairs in connection with industry, trade and small- and medium-sized companies,” the spokesman said. “He also has strong leadership so we believe he will be able to handle impending issues effectively and stably manage the ministry.”
His appointment is subject to a parliamentary confirmation hearing, though the National Assembly does not have the power to reject the appointment.
President Lee also named Eo Cheong-soo, 56, former chief of the National Police Agency, as head of the presidential security service to succeed Kim In-jong. Kim submitted his resignation following allegations of irregularities in a project to build Lee’s retirement residence.
“Eo is ideal for the position since he has rich experiences in security, intelligence and other relevant affairs,” the spokesman said.
“We expect him to ensure thorough security for the President in close cooperation with the police and military.”
