Wife is not a monster: murderers husband
In July 2006, a French resident of Seorae Village, a small French enclave in Banpo-dong, southern Seoul, reported to the police that he had found two dead infants in the fridge.
Shockingly, the police discovered the criminal behind the murder was the wife of the reporter - the mother of the dead babies.
In August 2009, Véronique Courjault, 43, was sentenced to eight years in prison for killing three infants, one of whom she had burnt in 1999 before her murder of the two babies. Last May, she was released from a French prison.
Jean-Louis Courjault, 45, Courjault’s husband, has recently spoken about the tragic event. “My wife is not a monster. She was suffering from a syndrome of pregnancy denial,” he claimed.
According to her husband, Mrs. Courjault was unaware of her pregnancy, merely considering her full belly as a sign of weight gain. Mr. Courjault states he was confused by his wife’s inability to differentiate what was real and unreal.
Last September, the man courageously divulged his side of the story in his book, “Je ne pouvais pas l’abandonner (I Could Not Abandon),” first published in France.
Now, the Korean version is available here in Korea.
In the emotional account, Mr. Courjault confesses that he had no choice but to accept his wife - a lifetime companion whom he loved and shared his life with for 18 years.
To raise further awareness about pregnancy denial, he also gives a detailed explanation of the syndrome to readers. Women suffering from this syndrome commonly grew up in a family that engages in minimal conversation, Courjault says.
"Had we known about this syndrome, many infants could have been saved and our family could have avoided this tragic occurrence," he lamented.
