Rape victim claims judge insulted her

A rape victim has committed suicide one day after appearing in court, claiming in her suicide note that she was humiliated by the judge, police said Sunday.

A 29-year-old Chinese-Korean was found dead at a hotel room in Oryu-dong, Seoul on June 1.

In the note, she claimed that she felt insulted at a court hearing as the unidentified judge implicated her of falsely accusing the defendant of sexually assaulting her.

“When I went to the hearing, I was accused of filing a false accusation against (the defendant). I felt severely insulted,” she said in the note.

Police said she took her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills, with an empty sleeping pill container found in the toilet of the hotel room.

She appeared in court as a witness on May 31 and was questioned after she accused a Chinese man of rape.

But the court officials denied the allegation, arguing the judge did not ask her any humiliating questions but only tried to confirm if it was a rape or mutually-agreed sex.

The bereaved family has filed a petition with the Supreme Court and plans to file a separate petition with the Korea Human Rights Commission for allegedly infringing on her rights.
