Killer of mother gets 22-year jail term

A court Saturday sentenced a 35-year-old man to 22 years in jail for the murder of his mother who abandoned him 27 years ago.

The man, surnamed Lee, stabbed his mother to death at her apartment in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, May 8 and also murdered her husband on the same day at a restaurant in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, as revenge for being abandoned by her when he was a child, according to the police.

“Although he was abandoned at an early age and has since led a hard life, we found it is necessary to give him a severe punishment given the brutality and immorality of the crime,” the judge said in his ruling.

According to the police, Lee led a tough life after his mother deserted him when he was 7 and his father committed suicide five years later. He then had to spend his youth in an orphanage with his younger brother, which led him to hold a grudge against her and her new husband.
