Saudi women to be allowed to drive?

Recently, a Saudi woman activist has been arrested for recording a video clip of herself driving and then uploading the file on the Internet, according to foreign news report. The whole video on Youtube.com was one of the hottest viewed video for the past few days.

Saudi Arabia is the only country that prohibits women from driving vehicles. The Saudi government, despite the international ridicule over the tradition, says they have a justification. Under the strict ruling of the monarchy, they are solemn believers of the Sunni Islamic teachings.

Despite the fact, a lot of hostility was directed towards the government for arresting her, both at home and abroad, on the Internet.

“We call upon you, custodians of the two holy mosques, to release the citizen Manal Alsharif and relieve her of the unjust actions toward her,” the petition says.

Some Muslims argue that they are in fact being considerate for women, as long as this tradition is concerned. They argue that parking, driving and leaving the car are all a burden for women that the men are kind enough to take over instead. As a result, Saudi women are in fact being treated as queens, according to those who support the ban of woman from driving.

“We also believe that now is the time to resolve the issue of female driving clearly ... We need a clear law to determine if it is banned or allowed.”

After consistent petition and negotiation, she was bailed out under a solemn vow that she would not drive ever again.

International pressure has also played a part in her release. According to the recent Wikileaks documents, the Obama administration has been urging the Saudi government to enhance its women’s rights.

It is widely believed that the Saudis has surrendered to the worldwide pressures.

A campaign, initially organized by Alsharif, is to be held on the Jun 17, where many women promised to drive their cars out onto the streets in a protest against this Muslim tradition to continue on the fight for rights to drive.

사우디 여성운전 허용할까?

세계에서 유일하게 여성의 운전행위를 금지하고 있는 사우디 아라비아가 여성운전 금지 제도의 적법성을 놓고 토론회를 열 예정이어서 관심이 모아지고 있다.

사우디 의회에 해당하는 국정자문위원회 `슈라위원회'는 여성 운전을 허용해야 하는지를 주제로 몇 주 안에 토론회를 열 예정이라고 밝혔다고 현지 일간지 카바르가 6일 전했다.

이번 토론회는 여성 운전 허용을 촉구하는 한 시민단체가 사우디 남녀 128명의 서명을 받아 탄원서를 제출함에 따라 이뤄지는 것이다.

이 단체는 이미 상당수 사우디 여성들이 인근 아랍국가에서 국제 운전면허증을 취득해 자유롭게 운전을 하고 있다며 유독 사우디 안에서만 여성 운전을 금지하는 것은 불합리하다고 주장했다.

또 사우디 여성 모두가 매월 300∼600달러를 주며 운전기사를 둘 형편이 안될뿐더러 '외간 남성'이 모는 차를 타는 것보다 차라리 스스로 운전하는 게 이슬람 율법에 더 적합하다고 강조했다.

슈라위원회 위원인 압둘 말리크 카얄도 "운전은 여성에게도 당연한 권리"라며 "이를 막을 법적 근거는 어디에도 없으며 여성 운전 허용은 필수불가결하고 시급한 사안"이라고 말했다.

사우디 왕가의 공주들도 여성 운전을 허용해달라며 목소리를 높이고 있다.

아랍 최대 갑부인 알왈리드 빈 탈랄 사우디 왕자의 아내인 아미라 알-타윌 공주는 2009년 한 인터뷰에서 여성 운전 허용을 촉구했고, 롤와 알-파이살 공주도 2007년 세계경제포럼에서 사우디 여성 운전 허용의 필요성을 역설했다.

사우디 정부는 그러나 여성에게 운전을 허용하면 남성 운전자 및 수리공 등 남성과 접촉할 기회가 많아져 도덕적 가치가 붕괴될 수 있다며 자국 여성은 물론 외국인 여성의 운전도 금지하고 있다.
