Child mutilated in Syrian rebellion becomes a martyr

Hamza Ali al-Khateeb, 13, had a round face that hadn’t yet lost its baby fat, a tuft of black hair, and sparkling eyes. He was a normal schoolboy who had the misfortune to be living amidst the froth of revolution – the Syrian uprising against their ruthless president, Bashar al-Assad.

On April 29, Hamza’s luck ran out as he vanished into the arms of the security forces under the eyes of the government during a protest in his village, the Daily Mail reported. For an entire month, his terrified family awaited yet dreaded his return, hoping against hope that he was alive.

But even their wildest, darkest imaginations weren’t enough to prepare them for the shock of Hamza’s mutilated body when it was finally returned.

Bullet holes. Cigarette burns. Purple bruises. Broken neck. Worst of all, his genitals had appeared to have been brutally mutilated.

The security forces had warned the family to keep quiet – or else. In a desperate attempt to tell the world about Syria, the family defiantly posted the video of his horribly deformed body on YouTube – and Hamza became the new face of the Syrian revolution, a calling card for the hopeless and the dejected, and a martyr.

Although journalists are banned from the country, videos and images that have seeped their way out of the information gridlock demonstrate the potency of 13-year-old Hamza on the seven-week-old rebellion.

They’re all signs of a brutally oppressed citizenry rising up against a tyrannical president that has, so far, given no signs of a letup in his suppression of dissent.

Radwan Ziadeh, an exiled human rights activist, told the Washington Post that Syrian police have routinely captured and tortured protestors. “Torture is usual in Syria. It’s not something new or strange,” he said, although he noted that this was the first time that the victim had been so young.

As Hamza’s body is washed and prepared for burial, it is clear that his influence will reach far beyond the grave.

반정부 시위가 최초로 시작된 시리아의 남부 도시 다라에서 13살 소년 함자 알 카티브(사진)가 사라진 것은 지난달 29일이었다. 사촌이 반정부 시위에 참여했다가 목숨을 잃은 뒤 어린 소년 또한 시위대에 합류했다. 가족들은 그가 어딘가에 구금돼 있을 것이라고 생각했지만 행방을 알 수 없었다. 약 한 달 뒤인 지난 25일 소년은 싸늘한 주검으로 돌아왔다.

시신조차 온전하지 못한 채였다. 살해 목적이라기보다는 고문을 하기 위해 쏜 것으로 보이는 몇 개의 총알이 몸에 박혀 있었고 손, 막대기, 신발 등으로 구타당한 흔적이 또렷했다. 성기도 잘려나간 채였다.

아랍 시민혁명에 대한 독재정권의 반인권적 대응으로 고통받는 시민이 늘고 있다. 27일 ‘시리아 혁명 2011’의 페이스북 페이지 활동가들은 AFP통신에 함자의 고문 사실을 밝히고 “우리들은 함자의 사진을 들고 분노를 표현하기 위해 모든 구역, 모든 집을 돌아다니고 있다”고 말했다.

시리아에서 고문은 새로운 일이 아니다. 국제앰네스티 시리아 연구원인 닐 새몬드는 1987년 보고서에 38종류가량의 고문이 행해지고 있다고 고발한 바 있다. 최근에는 몇 가지 새로운 고문기술이 더해졌다고 월스트리트저널(WSJ)이 28일 보도했다.

인권단체와 구금자들의 증언에 따르면 시리아 당국은 시위 참가자는 물론 시위 참가 예상자들까지 막무가내로 잡아들이고 있다. 감옥이 모자라 학교, 축구 경기장, 보안시설, 병원 등도 간이 수용시설로 변했다는 외신 보도가 잇따르고 있다.

다마스쿠스의 한 병원 의사는 WSJ에 “병원을 차지한 보안군이 구금자들을 학대하고 있다”고 전했다. 이 의사는 “그들은 마약성분인 모르핀을 투여했다가 이후 며칠 동안 주지 않기도 한다”며 보안군은 이 같은 사실을 알려 시민들에게 공포를 심어주려 한다고 말했다. 페이스북과 유튜브 등에 고문•살해된 함자의 모습이 공개되면서 시민들은 분노하고 있다.

지난 27일 다라에서 수백명이 모인 것을 비롯해 전국에서 반정부 금요시위가 벌어졌고 수도 다마스쿠스 외곽에서 4명, 다라에서 4명, 제3의 도시 홈스에서 3명 등 12명이 사망했다. 인권단체와 활동가들은 함자 외에 병원에 고문 기록이 있는 100여명에 대해 진상조사를 촉구했다.

리비아에서는 카다피군에 의한 성폭행 피해자가 늘고 있다는 조사 결과가 나왔다. 런던에서 활동하는 아동 심리학자 세함 세르게와가 고향을 떠나 난민 캠프에 수용된 리비아 주민 7만명을 대상으로 설문조사한 결과 259명이 카다피군에게 성폭행을 당했다고 대답했다고 AP통신이 전했다.

성폭행은 벵가지, 토브루크, 브레가, 미스라타, 아즈다비야 등 전국 각지에서 발생했으며 남편이나 아이들이 보는 앞에서 변을 당했다고 진술한 여성들도 있었다.

그러나 무슬림 사회에서는 성폭행 자체가 가문의 수치로 여겨지면서 가족들로부터 버림받을 수 있기 때문에 숨기는 경우가 많아 실제 피해자는 더 많을 것으로 추정된다. 국제형사재판소 루이스 모레노 오캄포 수석검사도 지난 17일 리비아의 조직적 성폭행에 대해 조사를 하겠다는 뜻을 밝힌 바 있다.
