Anti-defection forces search even feminine hygiene products

North Korean discontent has reached critical levels, with citizens comparing the country's power élite to the police officers who, during the Japanese colonial rule, were notoriously cruel to Koreans, Free North Korea Radio reported Feb. 22.

The aristocratic class has always played a pivotal role in North Korean society. But following the country's worst ever economic hardship in recent times, people have come to regard them as “the looters,” according to the Seoul-based radio station which broadcasts news to North Korean residents.

“The dictatorial regime has created a special police force which checks travelers to prevent them from defecting, their extreme behavior is inviting severe criticism from residents,” one North Hamgyeong Province-based source told the radio.

“Police officers of the special force bring women with travel certificates into an investigation room and check their cosmetics and even their feminine hygiene products,” he said.

“Even the Japanese didn't go this far during the colonial rule,” another resident said, criticizing the police officers’ unreasonable behavior. “It seems one would be better off not visiting ill siblings and relatives at all, because the police are checking our traveling to the extreme.”

Further, the authorities' oppression and pillaging are so rampant that people who live in the border regions can hardly live comfortably unless they have personal relations with one or more security, military or police officer, according to North Korean sources.

“It is highly probable that the communist regime of Kim Jong-il will collapse as a result of strong clashes between the residents and the élite class,” said one North Korean defector.

北 주민, "탈북 막으려 여성 생리대까지 뒤진다"

최근 북한 주민들이 권력계층을 ‘일제 순사’로 비유할 정도로 불만과 갈등이 심해져 위험수위를 넘어서고 있다고 자유북한방송이 22일 보도했다.

이 방송은 그간 북한 사회구조에서 중추적 역할을 맡았던 권력계층이 최근 최악의 경제난을 겪으며 주민들로부터 ‘약탈자 무리’로 인식되고 있다고 전했다.

실제로 이 방송의 함경북도 소식통은 “최근 탈북시도를 막는다는 이유로 독재정권이 만들어놓은 타격대가 주민들의 세찬 비난을 받고 있다”고 말했다. 그는 “탈북시도를 막는다는 이유로 새로 생겨난 보안성 유동인원 타격대가 여행증명서가 있는 북한 주민들조차 단속실로 데려가 일제 순사들처럼 여성들의 화장품과 위생대(생리대)까지 뒤진다”고 말했다.

이런 타격대의 횡포에 주민들은 “일제 시대에도 이렇게까지 하지는 않았다”며 “형제 친척들의 병문안도 없이 이제는 인연을 끊고 사는 게 더 마음 편하겠다”는 말이 나오는 실정이라고 이 소식통은 전했다.

또 국경지역 거주민들은 보안원이나 보위부 요원을 끼지 않으면 살아갈 수 없을 정도로 탄압과 약탈이 만연해 있다는 것이 북한 내부 소식통의 전언이다.

이 같은 상황에서 일부 탈북자들은 “앞으로 김정일 독재정권이 일반 주민들과 권력계층 사이 모순이 폭발하는 것으로 붕괴 가능성도 있다”는 말이 흘러나온다고 이 방송은 전했다.
