N. Korea threatens nuke use against joint naval drills

North Korea Saturday threatened to counter with nuclear weapons the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States in the East Sea on Sunday, Yonhap News Agency said.

"The army and people of the DPRK will legitimately counter with their powerful nuclear deterrence the largest-ever nuclear war exercises to be staged by the U.S. and the South Korean puppet forces," the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, citing a statement issued by the North's most powerful body, the National Defense Commission.

DPRK stands for North Korea, whose official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

South Korea and the U.S. will conduct the naval drills in the East Sea for four days as the first in a series of exercises scheduled for the coming month in the West and East seas to show joint deterrence against North Korea's torpedoing of the South Korean warship Cheonan.

북한 국방위, 한미연합훈련에 `보복성전' 다짐

북한 국방위원회는 25일부터 동해상에서 대규모로 진행되는 한.미 연합훈련 등과 관련해 "강력한 핵억제력으로 당당히 맞서나갈 것"이라며 "우리 군대와 인민은 미제와 남조선 괴뢰들이 의도적으로 정세를 전쟁접경에로 몰아가고 있는데 대응하여 필요한 임의의 시기에 핵억제력에 기초한 우리 식의 보복성전을 개시하게 될 것"이라고 24일 밝혔다고 조선중앙통신이 전했다.

연합뉴스에 따르면 국방위원회 대변인은 이날 `우리 식의 강위력한 억제행동으로 침략자들의 무모한 군사적 도발책동을 짓부셔 버릴 것이다'라는 제목의 성명을 발표, 연합훈련과 내달 실시될 을지프리덤가디언(UFG) 연습을 "우리에 대한 군사적 압살을 노린 노골적인 도발행위"라고 비난하며 이같이 말했다.

성명은 이어 "미제가 핵 또는 상용무기로 우리를 공격하거나 침공하지 않겠다고 확약한 9.19공동성명의 정신을 전면적으로 뒤집고 직접적인 군사적 도발책동에 매달리고 있는 조건에서 그에 대응한 전면적인 보복조치를 취하는 것은 우리 군대와 인민의 응당한 선택"이라고 주장했다.
